Improving the Quality of Research and Innovation in Education, Science, Technology, and Arts in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0

Facing the Industrial Revolution 4.0, to realize the vision of Indonesia, becoming the world’s top ten largest economy in 2030, the Indonesian government prepares a roadmap of Making Indonesia 4.0. One of the prioritized programs is the human resource development which is essential to succeed the implementation of Making Indonesia 4.0. Indonesia is planning to change the curriculum of education by giving more emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). This will be carried out by harmonizing the curriculum with future needs. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is characterized with the improvement of manufacturing digitalization driven by the following four factors, namely (1) increase of data volume, computation, and connectivity, (2) analysis, ability, and intelligence of business, (3) new interaction between men and machine, and (4) improvement in the instruction of digital transfer to the physical world. The technological advancement enables automatication in all fields.

The new technology and approach combining the physical, digital, and biological worlds will basically change the humans’ life and interaction styles. The change will globally involve all stakeholders in the public sector, private sector, and civil society as well as universities. In the Industrial Revolution 4.0 educators are demanded to create learning which is becoming more creative, innovative, and succeeds in developing various learning models to improve the competences of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.

The improvement of human resource is not separated from the universities’ roles in developing learning innovations through researches. Their roles in improving the educators’ creativity and innovation are highly required. Therefore, it becomes more important for universities as developers and executors in education, research, and community service to play more roles in producing graduates with competences relevant with the demands of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

The meeting of researchers with various backgrounds in the scientific forums becomes important to respond to the challenge of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. International Conference on Educational Research and Innovation (7th ICERI), which a forum which gathers ideas and innovations, especially in educational researches, tries to accomodate this. The seventh upcoming ICERI is held on October 24 & 25, 2019 with the umbrella theme of “Improving the Quality of Research and Innovation in Education, Science, Technology, and Arts in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0”. The theme is raised to contribute ideas based on research findings in overcoming the problems of human resources who are still unprepared to face the Industrial Revolution 4.0, in terms of competencies.

The seventh ICERI is aimed at spreading the ideas, experience, and findings of the researches conducted by lecturers, teachers, and researchers to improve the quality of research in determining and developing knowledge.
